Cycle 1 Math Review Book

Mary (pretty much) knows her math memory work so far, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't really know what she's saying. She's only four, and we're not doing any formal math program this year; I really don't think she knows what the bigger numbers even look like. What to do? Well, since our Geography Map Friends Review Book has been working out so well for us, I decided to make a special book just for math. Each week's memory work has at least one page, and there are extra pages added for dry erase review games. Here, I'll show ya:

I printed pages from C3, laminated them, and then had them bound together at Staples. If you plan on making one yourself, be mindful of how you laminate the pages and have them put together (if you want the book to stand up on its own). Lesson learned the hard way here; I had to re-laminate quite a few pages. Sheesh. . .

Here's what I was saying about dry erase review work. The page above on the right has all the numbers, and I can tell her to circle the numbers for skip counting 6's, etc. Since all the pages are laminated, we'll just use a dry erase marker and review as much as we'd like. I downloaded almost all of these pages from C3, and then I made a few myself.

These pages above are brilliant! On C3, this is Math Laws with Pics.pdf by Mom2five. Awesome!

Here's the new book in action! Mary is pointing to the numbers as she sings them (while we're eating breakfast, but certainly not with food in her mouth. We are in the South, after all, and manners matter! ;)  Ooh! And don't look at her elbows on the table! Moving on, nothing to see here!).

And, also in the spirit of 'being real,' here's my youngest getting awfully ornery because she can't reach the book. Yes, I did hand her the book after I snapped this picture (heart of stone I have not). ;)

Mr. Gallon is my new favorite thing these days; so much so, that I put him on the cover of the review book. I found him here and fell in love! We won't be introduced to Mr. Gallon until Week 13, but he's so cute that I just had to share him with you!

If you're interested in making your own math review book for Cycle 1, here are the pages I downloaded from C3 if you need some help getting started (listed by file name and then user name):

Weeks 1-6: No longer available on C3. Big bummer. :(
Week 7: SkipCounting13s.pdf by carolmcfa
Week 8: SkipCounting14.pdf by carolmcfa (these are really fun!)
Week 9: 15s_15x15 by KnoxFamily
Skip Counting Review Chart: SKIP COUNTING ALL.pdf by NoGreaterJoy5
Week 10: Squares.pdf by KnoxFamily
Week 11: cubes_txt.pdf by KnoxFamily
Weeks 12, 14-24: Cycle 1 Math.pdf by brandyferrell
Week 13: Math Review Book - Week 13.pdf by melodystroud (It's me! This is my one big contribution to C3! Ha! One day I'll quit being such a moocher. ;) I really wanted to share my Cycle 1 Memory Work Flip Chart, but MS Word and I are not exactly simpatico at the moment. )
Weeks 21-24: Math Laws with Pics.pdf by Mom2five (this is one of the ones pictured above)
Subject Summary: Cy1 MemMaster NB (4).pdf by foundations (p. 17 has all of the memory work on ONE page!)

To see more of how we use this book in our daily review time at the dinner table, click here.

Let me take a minute here to say thank you to all who share on C3. These pages and the songs (wow! those songs are all GREAT!) are so helpful! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Now then, this is just what I found and used in the small amount of spare time I had to make this book. There are SO many fantastic resources available on C3, too much to really go through all at once. So if you don't like my picks, or if your kids don't need so much visual stuff, there is still something out there for you if you want to make a review book. So far, my girls have really enjoyed it!

UPDATE: For some really strange reason, lots of the files listed have been removed from C3. Yeah, no idea what's going on with that. Hmm... So, if you still want to make your own review book, you can certainly do it, but you'll have to make some adjustments and pull what you can from C3 or just make your own pages. I know, it's a bummer. :(

This post is being submitted for the October Classical Conversations Blog Carnival over at Brandy's awesome site Half-a-Hundred Acre Wood. Be sure to check it out!

  1. Hi Melody! So many great ideas. THANK YOU for including the file/usernames for the C3 resources you've used. We also love gallon man! (How many times have I drawn that guy up on the board?!? LOL!) Thanks for submitting this to the CC Blog Carnival! I've linked to some of your other pages, too! :)

    1. Thanks for doing the blog carnival, Brandy! I always love seeing what others are doing, and I especially LOVE the weekly link-ups. I've gotten SO many great ideas from those! You're like a CC rock star, girl, and I'm always star-struck when you comment! ;) And I really do love your new profile picture!

  2. I'm not finding janemariecadman@gmail.com on C3. Is that where you got those files? I'm wanting to make this for the Abecedarians I tutor.

    1. Hi, Jill! Yes, she's the user, but I just looked her up, too, and she's not listed. However, if you clear out all the filters and just keep Math and then search for Skip Counting Charts, you'll find the file. I have no clue why she's not listed in the user names, but you should be able to find it by searching for the file name. Please let me know if you still can't find it! :)

    2. I emailed her and she sent them to me! Thanks for looking for me. Your ideas are really helping me tutor my Abecedarians because my children are 12 and 14 and I don't always remember what will work best with my class : )

    1. Thanks, Crecia! I love how Math is the same for each cycle, so I really feel like I can cross it off my list with this book. Now, if only Latin were so easy.... ;)

    1. Jamie, hmmmm... I'm not sure what the problem could be? Have you checked all the little drop-down boxes or filters? I always search by username first; it's much easier to find what you're looking for if you know who created it. Let me know if you still have trouble. And thanks for checking out the blog! :)

    2. Aw, you're welcome! This is our first year with CC and we love it! ...as for looking for the files, for example, I'll look up "carolmcfa," week "all," cycle "1," category "math" and it says "no files found"...I'm bummed...do you think maybe things have been updated?

    3. Alright, Jamie, I'm flabbergasted! I couldn't find the files either! Hmmmm... I really don't know what to do here, except to say that this is a big bummer. I'm really sorry, girl. :( Boo!

    4. That's okay :) ...I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy! ha ha! I hope I haven't ruined this post for you either because it's all about the Math review book you had made with those files. :/ But there are others there that could make up for it. I'm still following your awesome idea as well as the many others! I'm copying almost every thing you're doing! Thank you again for sharing...and helping me out...'cause it's launched me into a new "realm" of CC to make it more enjoyable than it already is.

    5. I've updated the post; thanks for the heads-up, girl, about the files missing. How weird is that?! Anyway, I'm so glad you like the blog; it's a lot of fun to put together! I hope you have a wonderful and restful Sunday, Jamie! :)
